Digital Marketing Cost in South Africa (2026): Monthly Budgets for Local Businesses
September 23, 2026 · 6 min read
South African agencies quote anything from R3,000 to R50,000 a month for "digital marketing", and the quotes are rarely comparable. One covers Instagram posting only. Another bundles Google Ads, SEO and a monthly shoot. A third quietly includes ad spend inside the fee so the retainer looks bigger than the work behind it.
This guide breaks the monthly cost into the parts you actually pay for, so you can compare quotes properly and set a budget that fits a single-location salon, clinic, restaurant or studio.
Three lines, not one
Every digital marketing budget splits into three separate lines. A good quote shows all three.
**The retainer.** What the agency or freelancer charges for strategy, content, posting, ad management and reporting.
**Ad spend.** Money paid to Meta or Google to show your ads. It should be billed to your own card, in an ad account you own.
**One-off foundations.** Brand identity, a website and shoot days that the monthly work depends on.
If a quote says "R12,000 including ads", ask how much of that reaches Meta. It could be R2,000 or R8,000, and those are very different services.
Retainers by scope
**R3,000 - R8,000.** A freelancer or small studio managing one or two platforms from templates and photos you supply. Useful for staying visible. Rarely enough to move enquiries on its own.
**R8,000 - R18,000.** Where most established local businesses should be shopping. Content planned around your offers, some video shot or edited for you, community management, basic ad management and a monthly report that counts enquiries, not just followers.
**R18,000 - R35,000.** Social, paid ads and search run together, regular shoot days, landing pages and cost-per-lead tracking across channels. Sensible for multi-branch businesses or anyone whose revenue depends on online bookings.
**R35,000 and above.** Multi-brand or national accounts with large content volumes and dedicated account teams. A single-site business should question why it is being quoted here.

Ad spend: the realistic floor
Meta ads targeting one metro, whether Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, start working predictably at around R3,000 to R8,000 a month. Below roughly R100 a day the platform struggles to learn who responds, and results jump around from week to week.
Google Search ads cost more per click but reach people already searching for your service. A clinic or salon can run a focused test on R5,000 to R12,000 a month with a short list of high-intent search terms and a tight radius around the business.
Check your invoices in the first month. Ad platforms bill South African accounts with VAT on top, so the figure on your card will be higher than the budget you set in the dashboard. Plan on the real number.
Judge the first two months on cost per enquiry or booking, not reach or clicks.
SEO: slower, but it compounds
Local SEO retainers in South Africa commonly start around R5,000 to R10,000 a month. The work covers technical fixes, service pages, local listings and reviews, and it usually takes three to six months before rankings shift enough to bring steady enquiries.
Before paying anyone monthly for SEO, finish the free part yourself: a complete Google Business Profile with real photos, correct hours, your service area and a steady flow of genuine reviews. For many local businesses that alone produces more calls than the first few months of a paid retainer.
One-off costs outside the retainer
Monthly marketing assumes the foundations exist. If they do not, budget for them separately.
**Brand identity:** a logo, colour palette and templates so everything you post looks like one business.
**Website:** a fast, mobile-first site where ads and search traffic can book or enquire. Our South African website cost guide covers the price bands.
**Shoot days:** R3,000 to R12,000 each if not included, depending on crew, location and editing.
A realistic starting budget
For one salon, spa, clinic or restaurant in a South African metro, a workable 2026 budget is R8,000 to R15,000 a month for content and account management, plus R3,000 to R8,000 in ad spend. That is roughly R11,000 to R23,000 all in, before VAT where it applies.
Spend much less and you are mainly paying for presence. Spend much more before your profile, website and reply times are ready, and you are paying to send people to something that does not convert them.
Questions to ask before you sign
Is VAT included in the quote? Is ad spend separate, and are the ad account and Business Manager in my name? How many posts and Reels a month, and who shoots them? What is reported, enquiries or engagement? What is the minimum term, and what happens to my content and accounts if I leave?
An agency that answers those clearly is worth comparing on price. One that cannot is not ready for your budget.
We scope work around the enquiries you want and publish our pricing openly. See social media management in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or content creation in Durban.
