How Much Does Branding Cost in South Africa? (2026 Pricing Guide)
July 24, 2026 · 7 min read
Ask five South African studios what a brand identity costs and you will get five answers between R4,000 and R150,000. That spread is real, and it is not arbitrary. Here is what sits behind each band.
What you actually get at each price band
**R3,000 - R8,000.** A logo, usually from a freelancer or a template marketplace. You get a mark and maybe two colour options. No system, no guidelines, no thinking about how it works on a shopfront or an invoice. Fine if you need something today and expect to redo it within a year.
**R10,000 - R25,000.** A proper small identity: logo suite (primary, secondary, icon), colour palette, type system, and a short guidelines document. This is the band where most independent salons, cafes, and clinics land, and it is usually the best value in the market.
**R30,000 - R60,000.** Identity plus application: social templates, menu or price list design, signage artwork, packaging or uniform direction. You are paying for the work of making the brand exist in the real world, not just in a presentation.
**R80,000+.** Strategy-led work with research, naming, positioning, and a full system. Justified when you are launching a group, franchising, or repositioning an established business. Overkill for a single salon.
What moves the number
**Scope of application.** The logo is rarely the expensive part. Designing every place the brand appears is.
**Number of rounds.** Studios that quote low often cap revisions at one or two. Read that line in the proposal before you compare prices.
**Whether strategy is included.** Positioning work, competitor analysis, and messaging can double a quote. Sometimes worth it, often not for a business that already knows exactly who it serves.
**Asset ownership.** Confirm you receive editable source files and full rights. Some cheap packages hand over flattened PNGs, which means paying again for every future change.
The Johannesburg / Cape Town / Durban difference
Johannesburg quotes run highest, driven by Sandton and Rosebank agencies pricing against corporate budgets. Cape Town sits close behind, with a design-led market that charges for craft. Durban tends to run 20-30% below Joburg for comparable scope, though the Umhlanga and Ballito corridor has been closing that gap fast.
Remote studios have flattened this considerably. Where your designer sits matters much less than it did five years ago.
How to compare quotes fairly
Put every quote against the same four questions: what deliverables, how many revision rounds, what timeline, and do I own the source files. Most price differences dissolve once you normalise for those.
Be suspicious of a quote that is dramatically below the rest. It usually means a narrower scope you will discover halfway through, not a bargain.
What we charge
We quote South African clients in rand and publish ranges rather than making you book a call to find out. Most salon, spa, and restaurant identity projects land in the R12,000 - R35,000 band depending on application scope.
