Instagram vs. TikTok for Local Service Businesses

July 26, 2026 · 6 min read

The honest answer for most local service businesses is Instagram first, TikTok second, and never both until the first one is genuinely working. Here is the reasoning rather than just the verdict.

Why Instagram wins for local

**Local intent is built in.** Location tags, local hashtags, and the map surface all push your content toward people who can physically visit you. TikTok's distribution is interest-based first and location-based a distant second.

**The audience is buying.** Instagram's user base skews slightly older and considerably higher in disposable income, which matters when you are selling a R600 treatment rather than a R60 product.

**The profile does more work.** An Instagram profile functions as a portfolio. Someone can land on your grid and evaluate twelve pieces of your work in three seconds. A TikTok profile is a list of videos, which is much slower to assess.

**Booking is closer.** Bio link, DM, WhatsApp button, all one tap. TikTok's path from discovery to booking is longer.

What TikTok is genuinely better at

**Reach without a following.** TikTok will still show a good video from an account with 40 followers to thousands of people. Instagram increasingly will not. If you are starting from nothing, TikTok gets you seen faster.

**Personality-led services.** If the business is substantially about a person, a stylist, a trainer, a chef, TikTok rewards that far more generously.

**Younger services.** Nails, lashes, brows, barbering, and casual food skew younger and perform well there.

**Search.** A meaningful share of under-25s search TikTok rather than Google. If that is your customer, being absent is a real cost.

The mistake: running both at half effort

Two neglected accounts perform worse than one maintained account, and they cost more time. Split attention shows: irregular posting, recycled content that fits neither platform's conventions, and unanswered DMs in two inboxes.

Pick one. Get it to the point where it reliably produces enquiries. Only then consider the second.

If you do run both, do it cheaply

Shoot vertical video once. Cut a TikTok-native version, faster, more direct, trend-aware, and an Instagram Reels version, more polished, more branded. Same raw footage, two edits. Never cross-post with a visible watermark, both platforms suppress it.

The actual decision

Choose Instagram if your customers are 28+, your service is premium or considered, and your work photographs well.

Choose TikTok if your customers are under 28, the business runs on a personality, and you are starting with no audience at all.

For most salons, spas, restaurants, and local service businesses we work with, that resolves to Instagram. Not because TikTok is worse, but because Instagram's local intent and buying audience convert faster for a business that needs bookings this month.
